Adolescence 6–24 months

Settling in a cafe is a trained behaviour, and it starts a long way from the cafe

Relaxation is built in short repeatable sets below threshold, starting on a mat at home and ending at an outdoor table.

Up, down, up, a whine, a lunge at a passing crumb, and your coffee goes cold. You leave after 20 minutes feeling like the table everyone was looking at.

This is rarely a dog who cannot relax. It is usually a dog who has been asked to relax in the hardest place available, first.

Relaxation is a behaviour, not a mood

Relaxation is trained as a behaviour in its own right, in short repeatable sets below your dog's threshold. It gets built the same way recall does.

Working below the level at which your dog reacts is the condition for learning near anything difficult. A busy pavement table on a Saturday is well over that line.

Build it in this order

  1. A mat at home, 2 minutes, with a chew. Pay your dog for lying still rather than for getting up and coming back.

  2. The same mat on the doorstep or in the front garden, 3 minutes, where there is a little traffic to ignore.

  3. A quiet outdoor table mid-week and off-peak, 5 minutes, then you leave. That is the whole visit.

  4. The same table at a busier hour, still 5 minutes. Change 1 thing at a time, never the place and the crowd together.

  5. Longer visits only once 5 minutes has become boring for both of you.

The details that decide it

  1. Go after a walk, not before. A dog who has sniffed for 30 minutes has something to come down from.

  2. Bring the mat. The mat is the part your dog already knows, and it travels.

  3. Bring a chew that lasts 10 minutes, and hand it over before your dog gets restless rather than after.

  4. Sit so your dog has your chair or a wall at their back, and no footfall behind them.

  5. Order once, and leave while it is still going well.

10 good minutes beats an hour of failing. An hour of failing teaches your dog that a cafe is a place where they cannot settle, and that lesson sticks.

If your dog cannot settle in your own living room at 9pm yet, start there instead. Evenings at home are a separate job with its own article, and it comes first.

Safety note

Take your dog home if they are panting hard, trembling, refusing food, or scanning and unable to stop. That is fear rather than bad manners, and practising through it makes it worse. Sudden behaviour change warrants a veterinary examination, so book one if the restlessness is new.
