The skirting board. A table leg. The corner of a rug they walked past for 6 months without noticing. Teething finished a long time ago, so this feels like a step backwards.
Why a 1 year old dog chews
Chewing is normal adult dog behaviour, not a puppy stage that ends. What changes in adolescence is how much your dog needs to do and how much of the house they can now reach.
Look for the pattern before you look for a spray. Most adolescent chewing lands in one of 3 windows. The hour before a walk, the hour after you sit down for the evening, or the time your dog spends alone.
Tonight, 3 things
Give one hour of the day a real chew. A rubber toy stuffed with your dog's own dinner and frozen, or a plain edible chew too large to swallow whole. 20 minutes of chewing does more for the evening than 20 minutes of throwing a ball.
Move the 3 objects your dog goes for. Every chewed table leg is practice, and behaviour change is built from management plus reinforcement rather than reinforcement alone.
Add 15 minutes of sniffing to the walk you already do. Let your dog stop and read things, on a loose leash, without being moved along.
What to do when you catch them
Say nothing at first. Walk over, put a chew down in front of your dog, and take the item away while they are busy with the better thing.
Do not chase, do not grab at the mouth, and do not tell your dog off after the fact. A dog who learns that chewing brings a person running has found a game.
If your dog runs off with the item, that is a separate problem, and it is answered by trading rather than by pursuit.
Safety note
Chewing and swallowing are not the same problem. Fabric, socks, plastic and cooked bone can obstruct a gut, and that is an emergency. Call your veterinarian now if your dog has swallowed something they should not have, or is retching, refusing food or repeatedly vomiting.
Why a bitter spray on its own is not enough
Bitter sprays work on some dogs and not others, and they only cover the surfaces you remember to spray. They also leave the reason in place, so the chewing moves rather than stops. Use one if you like, on top of a chew your dog is allowed to have.
Nothing here punishes your dog, which is the approach the veterinary behaviour guidance recommends.
How long this takes
Most adolescent chewing quietens inside about 3 weeks once the jaw has a daily job and the 3 favourite objects are out of reach. It often comes back briefly when your routine changes, which is a supply problem rather than a relapse.
Tonight's version, in one line: one frozen stuffed toy, handed over at the hour your dog usually starts.
